A new study from the Asian Institute of Management and QUINTA Consulting examines the most important factors influencing parking fees at airports. Data from 2011 to 2019 for the ten largest European airports was analyzed.

The analysis shows that the number of passengers and parking spaces as well as parking fees have a significantly positive impact on the amount of parking revenue at an airport. The study also analyzes how the population in an airport’s catchment, alternative parking options and the availability of public transport influence the number of parking spaces.

“The results of our study provide valuable insights into the factors influencing parking fees and their impact on the economic sustainability of airports,” said Dr. Friesen. “The findings are extremely important for airport operators to make the right strategic decisions for the parking infrastructure of the future.”

The full study was published in the Journal of Air Transport Management (JATM), the leading academic journal for aviation industry practitioners and academics, in January 2025.
